Where to take your boyfriend for his 40th birthday??
A question my girlfriend posed to herself a few months prior to me turning the dreaded 4-0. Somewhere relaxing, tick, but not too boring, I’m not that old, ok, how about throwing in a helicopter ride, because at 40 you’re still young at heart, great! But can’t break the budget, ok, how about a trip to the Whitsundays?
Only 2 hours from our home town of Sydney.
So after telling me to pack for sunny climes, off we went, I had no idea where I was going (although I was pretty sure that the Antarctic was ruled out) we got off the plane to a balmy 28c and were greeted by the very friendly and smiley staff that put shell necklaces around our necks, hang on are we still in Oz or have we magically been transported to Fiji?
The accommodation was lovely, although slightly dated (prints of tropical fish absolutely everywhere) but the view from our window made up for the fish overload- with the swaying palm trees and azure ripples, this will always be my happy place to think back to and relax.
On the day of my birthday the girlfriend led me to a bench, interesting, what will happen now? Then out of nowhere a metallic turquoise beauty came whirling around the corner to which point I must have looked like a kid entering a candy store for the first time, eyes nearly bulging out of my sockets. The outrageously young pilot (or am I just an old git?) then proceeded to whisk us over the most specular islands and sea currents I had ever witnessed, before landing on the pristine, aptly named Whitehaven beach where the pilot then set up a picnic under a tree with breakfast and Champagne.
He wandered off into the bushes with a magazine (we were slightly worried he would get lost and we would be marooned, but to no avail, it wasn’t long before he came back to us, alas) But not before we soaked in the views, sneaked in a cheeky snog and knocked back the champers (at 10am, we’re crazy!) before the boat loads of hung-over backpackers arrived.
For the rest of our time on the small island of Daydream, we mostly just chilled by the pool (with a pool bar, what more can you ask for!) tried our hand at archery (they still can’t find most of my girlfriend’s arrows) and enjoyed the stunning views (including the native wallabies snoozing and bouncing around- very cute if a little startling from time-to- time)
So all-in-all, a great time was had, would definitely recommend this for a bit of R & R!
And yes, you did well my better half, which now begs the question, where will you take me on my 45th??
